0 Comments | Posted by Alan in Blu Ray Players, Oppo
The mission of this blog is to provide consumers looking to take the dive into the Blu-ray experience with information on quality and “affordable” Blu-ray players. With that being said I think I am doing anyone in the market for a Blu-ray player an injustice by not informing them on the OPPO BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc Player. From the moment you open the box you will see how Oppo is committed to quality (see the video below). Now I know it may not be “affordable” for everyone but this thing is like the Cadillac of Blu-ray players.
Update: This Blu-ray player is currently on sale through this link here on Amazon.com
What does it play? The OPPO BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc Player will play pretty much any disc that you put in it. It will of course play Blu-ray discs. But it will also play DVDs, CDs, SACDs, AVCHD, DVD-Audio discs and even Kodak Picture CDs! Basically you’re getting a Blu-ray player a CD player and a regular DVD player all in one package. By consolidating all of these players into one you will save space, remote confusion and also reduce some of those messy wires.
How many times have you wanted to play your media files from your computer on your HDTV. Well go ahead and burn those video, music, or photo files to a CD or copy them to a USB flash drive and the BDP-83 will play them without a hitch!
Now lets talk about the awesome video quality! The OPPO BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc Player uses an award-winning processing chip made by Anchor Bay that provides outstanding picture quality that is clean and true to life. The player provides full 1080p HD output it can also output all other video formats like 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i. Want cinema quality viewing? It also supports Blu-ray discs that are recorded at 24 frames per second so you can enjoy that cinema quality experience.
Bring new life to those standard DVDs with DVD Up-conversion. That same Anchor Bay chip that provides the Blu-ray processing also provides up-converting of standard-definition DVDs. By de-interlacing and scaling, the chip will make your DVDs look great on your HDTV!
Now lets talk High-Fidelity Audio. You will not only be impressed by the OPPO BDP-83’s visual quality; you will also love the cinema quality audio that the BDP-83 creates. With support for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, you’ll experience loss-free sound that is studio-master quality. The player supports bit-stream output via HDMI 1.3, and it can decode TrueHD or DTS-HD audio into LPCM and yield sound via HDMI or 7.1-channel analog outputs.
How many times have you wished that component had more connections? The OPPO BDP-83 has plenty of connections to interface with your home theater system and HDTV. On the rear, there is a USB port, along with outputs for HDMI, component video, composite video, 7.1 analog audio, analog stereo output, and optical and coaxial digital audio. On the front of the player, there is yet another USB port that lets you quickly connect a flash drive to view movies, music, or photos. Whether you have a high-end home theater system or one with regular analog connections, the BDP-83 won’t have any problems interfacing with your equipment. There is also an Ethernet jack for use with BD-Live, as well as a hardwired IR in-and-out jack.
The OPPO BDP-83 also Converts Between PAL and NTSC it offers support for both NTSC and PAL systems, providing disc playback and video output. It also allows you to watch the content of one system in the output of the other; for example, you can watch a PAL movie on an NTSC TV (please note that this is subject to DVD and BD region restrictions).
The OPPO BDP-83 supports Blu-ray Profile 2.0. This means that it has special hardware, like an audio/video decoder and one gigabyte of internal storage. This allows for support to BD-Live (requires internet connection) features like Internet chats, scheduled chats with the director, Internet games, and more.
Here’s another little bonus the folks at OPPO have included is a universal power supply, making it compatible with the AC power of every region, so you won’t have to worry about damaging your player with incorrect voltage.
As you can see the OPPO BDP-83 Blu-ray disc player is made for the person who appreciates the highest quality electronics. Having the BDP-83 amongst your A/V gear is like having that Cadillac in the garage. It shows that you appreciate high quality and you are willing to pay a little more for that higher quality.

Let me show you what owners of the Oppo BDP-83 Blu-ray disc player have to say about it.
Mark says,
Wow! I didn’t think high quality was available any longer in today’s world. This player was very professionally packed Then taking it out of the box you immediately notice how well built this unit is. It includes the best quality power cord I have ever seen and an equally high quality HDMI cable. The play back of DVD and Blu-ray disks is by far the best I have come across in a player.

Here what recent buyers of the Samsung bd p3600 1080p blu ray disc player had to say:
Daisy,
I bought this blu-ray early this year, and don’t regret it at all. The blu-ray is fantastic, and my regular old DVD’s look fantastic on it too. And the sound is incredible. I love Pandora!! I use mine mainly to watch NETFLIX streaming however. This is a great feature!!!………….Click here to read the full review
Kali,
It took me forever to make the move to Bluray..thinking upconverted DVDs would be good enough for me. I finally decided to give Bluray a try, but skeptically thought I’d be returning the unit after comparing it to an Oppo 970 upconverting player. This player is far better than I expected or even hoped!…Click here to read the full review

The Samsung bd p1600 1080p blu ray disc player – Budget Price for Brilliant Performance
2 Comments | Posted by Alan in Blu Ray Players, Samsung
The Samsung BD P1600 1080p Blu ray disc player is Samsung’s feature packed entry into the world of sub-$150 Blu-ray players at Amazon.com and, though it is priced in the budget segment, it performs at a much higher level. It is a very sleek and visually appealing device, and would look very much at home among a bunch of extremely high end audio/video equipment.
The BD-P1600 is BD-Live ready, which means it can take advantage of all of the features that come with BD-Live enabled Blu-rays such as downloadable content including trivia games, pictures, and additional subtitles. Connection to the Internet is established either through the on-board Ethernet port, or the optional Link Stick USB wireless adapter that can be plugged in to either of the Samsung’s two USB ports, which will allow the Samsung to download firmware updates that will further increase its functionality as future technology allows. This Blu-ray player makes further use of the Internet as well by allowing direct streaming of both Netflix, if you are a subscriber, and the Pandora music service. Like most higher end Blu-ray players, Samsung BD-P1600p can upconvert your old DVDs, drastically improving their appearance on your HDTV to near HD quality. As 1080p requires HDMI, this player also makes use of HDMI 1.3, the single cord solution that is almost universally superior to component cables. Those with high end audio equipment will enjoy the options of DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD which complete the home theater experience. Older connection formats, such as HDMI component, analog audio, and optical audio out are also supported.
The Samsung BD-P1600 1080p Blu-ray disc player is not a player that you choose because you cannot afford something better. It’s a player that you choose because it simply does everything you need it to do, and looks nice doing it.
If you are interested in purchasing this Blu ray player you can get it at a great price at Amazon through this link here.

I bought one of these to replace a PS3 because I hated that it looked like a wart in my setup, had a loud fan, and could not bitstream. Finally there is a small blu-ray standalone that is fast, has a great picture and can bitstream advanced audio. It looks great in the rack and the netflix/pandora features are a nice bonus. I won’t be missing the PS3 at all…….Click here to read the full review

I got this unit to replace an aging DVD player, relieve some stress from my PS3 and replace an older Netflix streaming video player. The price point for this unit makes it affordable to anyone wanting to enter the Blu-Ray market for the first time. The additional features such as Netflix make it a no brainer in my opinion……..Click here to read the full review

The Sony bdp-s360 1080p blu-ray disc player review: offering high performance without the expensive price tag
1 Comment | Posted by Alan in Blu Ray Players, Sony
The day has finally come when major brand name Blu-ray players have become affordable enough for the average Joe. Listing at under $150 at Amazon, the Sony BDP-S360 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player is not only a Sony, and a Blu-ray player, which is probably enough to make it a great deal, but it also has plenty of the more advanced features that one would expect to see in a much higher end Blu-ray player.
Not only can the Sony BDP-S360 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player output in full 1080p HD, but it can also upscale your standard DVDs to look much better on your HD television. If you have a large DVD collection and a nice, new HDTV, you have probably noticed that your old DVDs look pretty terrible. You may have also noticed that a lot of less expensive devices claim to be able to up-convert, including cheap Blu-ray players, but all they really do is strategically expand the picture to fit the wider screen. True HD up-convert will bring your DVDs up to near HD quality.
Update: This Blu-ray player is on sale now. Check it out by clicking here
Audiophiles will love the Dolby TrueHD and dts HD- 7.1 Analog audio which sacrifices nothing by using audio compression instead of removing parts of the audio as many other codecs do. The quick start mode ensures that the Blu-Ray player will be up and ready to go within about six seconds of hitting the power button. Another extremely cool feature of the Sony BDP-S360 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player is the Ethernet port. This can be used to access extra features on specially designed DVDs.
This Blu-ray player is nothing short of amazing for the money. If you don’t have one, get it. If have a cheap one, replace it. You’ll be glad you did.

Here is what recent buyers thought of the Sony bdp-s360 blu-ray player
J.Goodnight,
Having purchased the “first edition” of the Sony Blu-ray player two years ago when they first hit the market, I found that I had made a big mistake. The original Sony Blu-ray player was very slow in loading Blu-Ray disks, sometimes taking up to 10 minutes before the movie could be played. This latest version on Sony’s Blu-Ray player seems to have corrected all of the problems it’s predecessor had……...Read the complete review here
Robert K,
This was my first purchase into the bluray world – and it didn’t disappoint but in a totally surprising way. The unit is sturdy, quiet, and runs flawlessly. I had been worried about firmware updates but so far there have been no reason to update it – so no complaints there. I ordered some bluray discs (despite the ridiculous cost of them) and they are spectacular. Now for the surprise……..Read the complete review here
